Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise at the age of a little girl. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, allowed her to explore art and literature as well as the theater in the daylight. DuVernay immediately became enthralled after showing her that 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay saw how art was a powerful tool to promote the cause of activism. DuVernay was taught to be socially mindful from her mother. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she was awarded qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism at the age of an elementary school student. She began as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to sit at the house of one member of the jury and go through their garbage. Her disappointment was evident in the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to switch over to the public relations industry. DuVernay was offered a job straight after college as a young publicist for a studio. The year 1999 was the time she founded her own business that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. The agency was the first to launch a variety of lifestyle and promotion networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
